Wandering the private gardens of the Sedgeford Hall Estate in Norfolk
Wandering the private gardens of the Sedgeford Hall Estate in Norfolk
As the morning sun begins to spill golden light across the dew-speckled paddocks, I step out from Estate Office, inhaling the comforting sounds of the tree breeze rustling and the sound of a great-spotted woodpecker nearby. As your holiday cottage manager I try to wander the dynamic landscape of the Sedgeford Hall Estate with a seasonal spirit of discovery — and I invite our guests staying with us to do the same.

The Roman Garden set within the Main Hall & Theatre
Within the majestic façade of the Main Hall, nestled in a sun-warmed courtyard, lies our lovingly restored Roman Garden. This private courtyard is exclusive for guests staying with us in the Main Hall. Imagine strolling between geraniums and hydrangea stone beds and watching the fish in the Pond. On sunny afternoons, you can enjoy dining out with your friends and family enveloped in a canopy of grape vines. My favourite moment? Sitting with a notebook in hand, while bees lazily weave through the beds and the breeze rustles the surrounding virginia creeper. If you’re really quiet you may also spot Britain’s smallest bird, the Goldcrest, taking a drink from the pond.

The Walled Garden
A short amble across from the Main Hall leads to the Walled Garden, a lush sanctuary enclosed by ancient brick. The rose bushes are a riot of colour between the long beds of lavender and buddleia. I invite guests to make their way over to this slice of eden, perfect for afternoon tea, games of croquet on the lawn, or simply a moment of tranquil repose beneath the dappled shade this time of year.

Park Cottage Garden
Across the paddocks, nestles Park Cottage. Guests who have booked to stay in this charming ground floor cottage. Can enjoy a more intimate plot brimming with cottage-style charms of honeysuckle and hollyhocks. Here, rose bushes frame the back garden, bees hum around lavender-strewn borders, and apples hang ready to fall into your hand along the drive way. Families can dine out or enjoy a quiet moment among the blooms.

The Wider Estate Grounds
Beyond gardens and walls, the estate unfurls into a tapestry of rolling woodland and farmland. Ancient oaks provide shade for picnics; meadows beckon with a promise of impromptu frisbee games; and our signposted pathways offer the perfect backdrop for a reflective countryside stroll. I often hear the sound of the greater spotted woodpeckers, gold crests, tree creepers and oyster catchers nesting, or children chasing shadows across the grass. And on a fine evening, nothing beats gathering round under the trees for a reflective chat or stargazing session—a marvel against the coastal dark skies.

A Personal Invitation from the Holiday Cottage Manager…
As I roam these grounds I delight in discovering something new each time, and I love nothing more than hearing from our guests that they have done the same during their stay with us. I invite you to wander, lose track of the world beyond the estate gates, taste the scent of lavender in the air, and linger within the woodlands or Walled garden. Pack your curiosity—and perhaps a picnic—and let the magic of Sedgeford Hall’s gardens and grounds be your canvas for the day.
